Taxi driver killed in motorway crash in County DurhamA taxi driver died when his vehicle left a motorway in County Durham.

His Skoda veered off the northbound carriageway of the A1(M), close to the Chester-le-Street junction, and hit an electricity substation.

The 59-year-old Stockton man was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but was pronounced dead a short time afterwards.

Four passengers from Sedgefield, a 40-year-old man, a woman, 38, and girl and boy aged six and two, were uninjured.

Witnesses to the incident, which happened at about 0400 BST, are asked to contact Durham Police.

Another sad day, but was he wearing his seat belt, as his passengers survived it looks like he wasn't, or he has had health problems and his side of the car took the brunt, or due to the time of day could he have fell asleep at the wheel??
