Taxi drivers are at breaking point

RECENTLY, IN other parts of the country, there has been an increase in suicides among taxi drivers because of the lack of work and deregulation.

Drivers are at breaking point and something has to be done immediately to help ease the pressure we are under.

We have to work longer and longer hours to make a wage and earn below the minimum wage.

It is no wonder that recently, some taxi drivers have been prosecuted for benefit fraud as they are finding it hard to pay bills.

Dundee councillors can do something to help the taxi driver’s plight, but for some reason choose not to.

This has been noted by the taxi trade, which is one of Dundee’s biggest employers, and I think it will affect these councillors at the next election.

I can only hope that taxi drivers who are feeling suicidal contact the Samaritans to discuss their feelings like I have in the past. — Taxi Driver.

If it ever gets that bad I'd be for signing on at the dole office....Cant really see how the samaritans can help unless they can offer you a better line of work on better money :?

Further letters is resopnce to Taxi drivers are at breaking point

I’ll be taking the bus

In response to the letter from Taxi Driver, you have got me scared and I will now travel by bus.
If driving a taxi is getting folk feeling like this who knows what they will do.

All jobs are very stressful at times and glad you did seek help. On the other hand remember you are driving the public and I would seek further help.

In my opinion, I don’t think you should be driving. — Bus Traveller.

Mass meeting call

I read with interest the Taxi Driver’s letter. He states that Dundee councillors can do something to help the taxi drivers’ plight but for some reason choose not to.
He also states that this has been noted by the taxi trade. I ask why the taxi trade is sitting back and doing nothing about it.

We have different associations and a committee who liase with the council so I ask, why don’t we as a trade as a whole have a mass meeting so we can voice our opinions and take these matters to the council. — Concerned Taxi Driver.
