This morning 14 Taxi drivers have been suspended for one month for over ranking in Sutton in Ashfield.

The Council have been scanning the CCTV for drivers who have been over ranking. Bear in mind there are 127 cars for 40 spaces.

I take it the lads aren't taking it without a fight?

Are they/have they joined up with a national association/union to fight this? :?

I always thought putting a rank space next to a bus stop, wherever possible, would be a good idea. That would spread the trade out a bit and people going for the bus may use the taxi instead. I'm not sure if it is a good idea or if the trade would actually use them if provided. Of course there is the age old problem of getting the council to agree anyway :-|

That is absolutely shocking.

I would have thought that's unlawful as it amounts to restriction of trade :?

In this day and age of human rights etc how can a council take away not one but FOURTEEN families incomes for a MONTH?Where the f*** do they come up with a month from?

I'm sorry but I would either carry on working and/or get a solicitor to appeal the decision. What a bunch of dictatorial tossers.Just who do these jumped up civil servants think they are?

I blame Tony Blair!

So,what happens if one or more of these drivers goes bankrupt through this heavy handed punishment?

I was taken to court years ago for this most serious of offences. The judge found us 'technically guilty' but gave us a conditional discharge and no fine but we had to pay council costs.
It all comes down to chucking licenses out like confetti and providing no rank spaces.

Disgusted

I would have thought a call to the Daily Mail or Daily Express newspapers might be handy, especially if they pick a reported who likes picking on local authority idiocy.

That aside....14 drivers all going to the Benefits section of both the council and government tommorrow morning, all at the same time, citing the name and contact details officer concerned and the councils chief executive to back up their unemployment benefit claim might cause some amusement, particularly if the press are involved.

Tell them to go and see their local MP.... he should be home on a Friday..... and ask him to ask the boss of your council why the licensing department is misusing your local CCTV

Weve been down that Route Trev, they said using it for overt surveillance was OK and they were not breaching any laws.

Why can councils not understand that giving someone a license is giving them the right to work so if you issue shedloads then overranking is the logical outcome if they don't like it they should come up with a solution to the problem which is their own making !

20 drivers have been suspended upto yet. As for the appeal the Council have told them there's a 6 week wait at the court for a hearing.
