'Taxi drivers – I don't live outside Bristol' TWO women were left angry and out of pocket after five different taxi drivers refused to take them home on the meter, incorrectly claiming they lived outside of Bristol city boundary. Friends Awen Jones, 36, and Carolyn Morris, 28, were enjoying a night out in Bristol when they tried to catch a taxi home from Clifton to Frenchay Park Road. Because they live inside the Bristol City Council boundary, licensed cabs are duty bound to charge them a fare measured by the meter, rather than setting a fixed fare normally associated with longer journeys. But the friends claim that five drivers in a row refused point blank to take them to their home on the meter, telling them they lived outside the city boundary. Miss Jones' address is around 0.6 miles inside the boundary. Web analyst Miss Jones, who eventually paid out a fixed rate of £18 to get home, said: "The taxi drivers refused to take me home on a meter because they say that I live outside of the city boundary, which is nonsense. "Usually on a meter it costs me between £14 and £15, but that night they were trying to get me to pay between £18 and £25 as a set price. "I have checked on the Bristol City Council map about city boundaries before and I'm definitely within it where I live. I've had problems before, but it's like word has got round and taxi drivers are all refusing to put the meter on. "I tried five taxis on Saturday and eventually had to go with one that offered to take me for £18. "Taxis are expensive enough without people adding on extra to rip you off. I should not have to take a print out of the boundary map with me when I go out, just to prove I'm right." Miss Morris, founder of Bristol-based online social club for making new friends, AllJoinOn.com, added: "They would just not have it that the address we gave them was not in South Gloucestershire and refused to put it on the meter. "They were actually pretty rude about it and were totally adamant that we were wrong. They would just not listen to reason – it was ridiculous. It seems to me pretty poor that they drive for a living but don't know the city boundaries." A spokeswoman for Bristol City Council said: "We will take robust action against any taxi driver who is overcharging, and we would urge people to report any instance to us. "We are taking every opportunity to let people know what their rights as a passenger are. "The law requires Hackney carriage drivers to use a taxi meter with fares set by the council for all journeys within the Bristol city boundary. "If the journey is outside the city boundary, the driver can agree a fare before the journey begins but if there is no negotiation, then the meter must be used. "The taxi driver can decline to take a passenger on a journey that ends outside the city boundary." Anyone who feels they have been overcharged should make a note of the date, time and details of the driver's badge number and the vehicle licence plate number, and report the matter to the Council Licensing Team on 0117 9142500 licensing@bristol.gov.uk. http://www.thisisbristol.co.uk/news/Taxi-drivers-8211-don-t-live-outside-Bristol/article-2519037-detail/article.html |
