Due to the tax fuel loophole owners are exploiting drivers If an owner requires a driver to drive one of there vehicles they should pay the minimum wage period |

Been there done that the drivers get very lazy or very greedy/fraudulent and the vehicle ALWAYS lost money my drivers either supply their own car or rent one off me There are other industries where similar self employed status is used such as hairdressing where they rent a chair in a salon or courier /parcel delivery where they rent the van and a multitude of franchised operations where you are tied to one company like chemdry or trophy petfoods or even "pink ladies" Addison lee is following a well trodden path and I suspect more and more people will become self employed especially now that the PAYE system has been shown to be flawed. Less likelihood of people stealing from themselves and the only profitable way to trade in an overcrowded and very competitive market place |

I think Terry has done a good thing getting this scam into the public. They are not self-employed, and the company should be employing them via PAYE. Sad thing is it appears even the authorities don't care either. He who pays the piper picks the tune.

It's a good article and consistant with the ph trade throughout the country with the exception of vehicle choice. However it may just be a one off article never to be followed up again

Why I drive a Taxi. £350 per week for renting a car plus all the other bits and bobs? No thanks.

Just looked at them, I think the reporter has opened a can of worms with regards to self employment within the Taxi trade. |

Another one from the same series of articles: How private hire firms tie drivers into self-employment deals By Nick Sommerlad on July 15, 2010 12:05 AM If you call a cab firm it's nigh-on certain that the driver who picks you up will be self-employed. London-based Lancaster Private Hire has lucrative contracts with a string of big firms, including the BBC. Most of its drivers are eastern Europeans who were told they could earn £400 or more a week in take-home pay. However, we've heard that the reality for some is very different. Alin Condrutz, from Romania, worked for Lancaster for two months last year and averaged £99 a week, after deductions for car hire, insurance and a security "bond". Lancaster said their more experienced drivers were better paid and happy. But should they really be called self-employed? Lancaster provides their accomodation when they arrive in the UK, their vehicles and insurance, and all their work. The GMB's national organiser for professional drivers, [Edited by GBC filter] says: "The private hire industry is rife with bogus self-employment, particularly among the larger companies." |
