A taxi driver was punched in the head during a robbery attempt in Edinburgh.

The incident is being linked to an earlier attack on a 45-year-old man, who was threatened with what looked like a knife around 12.35am on Saturday, at Constitution Street, in the Leith area.

He had just left the Port of Leith pub and walked towards the junction with Bernard Street when he was approached by two men near Noble's pub.

One of the robbers stood in front of the victim, while the other threatened him with a sharp object from behind, and demanded money.

The victim refused to hand over any cash and ran into the pub before returning home later and contacting police.

Around three hours later two men approached the taxi driver who was parked on Commercial Street. One of the men punched him on the side of the head and attempted to grab items out of the cab.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: "Given the location of both of these attempted robberies and a similar description of the suspects having been provided, we believe the same individuals may have been responsible.

"We would urge anyone who recognises the suspects' description and can assist us in identifying them to contact police immediately."

The suspect who confronted the first victim is described as white, around 18 years old and approximately 5ft 9in tall with a medium build, short fair hair and a clean-shaven face. He was wearing tracksuit bottoms.

Anyone with any information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
