Hi all,
I'm fed up with seeing list after list on this forum of drivers who are peeved with things as they are..
Be it; licensing, flagging, assaults, expense.. etc.. etc...
Look through the forums for the rest..

Do me a favour.. If just whining about it is enough.. tell your mother.

If you've got the need and the balls (need not be a physical qualification) to recognise that this trade is neck deep in [edited by admin].. read on.

The problem is: There are currently over 140,000 licensed Hackney drivers in this country. And barring a handful of groups representing up to a few hundred.. there is no representation.

That means, we don't get a say..

Why are there different standards in licensing through the country.
Why are PHV flagging up and down the country uncontested.
Why can't I move my taxi to a different LA after 3 years.
Why do the Police refuse to attend us being assaulted.
Why do we have to pay several hundred pounds to prosecute a runner and then get 75p per week.

WHY ARE YOU PUTTING UP WITH THIS....

AND THE ANSWER......

Because we are 140,000 individuals with no individual strength...

Enough is enough... I say....

What I propose....

I am willing to set up a national Hackney Driver Organisation.

For this to be viable, it has to be national and it has to be cost effective.

After a brief conversation with myself on the rank today, my suggestion (and I am open to hear your) is...

£3000 Life insurance
£300 per week sickness insurance
Legal representation
Union type memebership

And I'm thinking that a monthly subscription of about £20 should be the target.. That's less than 1 job per week..

Before I spend to much effort getting costs.. Who's got an opinion?

Comment here. Or, send it to me direct: Marc@BlackCab.org.uk

Give support , get control..

Omg was that really necessary you could have just put this thread up. There are already National associations and unions. Some give benefits and some don't. You are working in a profession full of individuals as you stated and most will do nothing until something is done to affect their lives. Sad but true, it's human nature

change nothing...
... and nothing will change.

If you're happy with that.. stop complaining..

Personally, it's driving me wild. I've actually got out of my car and got into the PH to explain to the punter that this driver is bull$hitting you..
You are not insured and he is legally not allowed to charge you if you go with him. If you want a taxi, get in mine. If you stay here. Don't pay.
The drivers just sit there looking forward..
Must confess, there's been successes and failures from that method..lol

Whatever you do decide to do, get rid of the £300 per week sickness pay!!!!! Or you will be out of business in the first week.

I have said it before & I'll say it again; this is a massive national problem now & the only way to get the problem noticed is to 'Flash Mob' a given town, on a given day, between a given time.

That's the only way things will start to happen, by constant 'Flash Mob' demonstartions bringing the selected area to a standstill.

Taxi from all round the country, driving around, not saying a word about why they are there will get the public very curious, very angry when the traffic stops for 3-6 hours.

Do it regularly enough around the country & something might get done.

Everything else has failed.

The "National Associations and unions" as you put it are completely toothless.

Without 24/7 legal representation to hold council's to account, you don't have any representation worth talking about.

to clarify my 2-3 jobs statement, that was to make the £5 weekly sub, not the monthly one of £20. Going by some of the other estimates eg 6-7, 6 day, 4 night etc, I hope you meant for the £20. 6 jobs =£5  how low is your flag fall?

BTW good idea, but a non-starter, imho, sorry. Better to get the numbers up in the present associations, and then try for a concerted effort from them.

Mr/Ms/Rev M4rcs - This is the only way - but how do we go about it?

I have my obvious preference, but all the organizations are worth joining as we all need representation at local, regional and national levels. With some more than others your Political leaning will influence your choice.

The Govt. have the ideal way of keeping our voices unheard - they farm out licensing to local authorities. This has the result that if I am sh*t on from a great height there is no reason you would want to fight my corner, just as if you were the statue I would not feel that I should or could cover your a*se.

All the organizations have some joint goals - I thought the MoMs would be good but it was not to be - they should have selected one item and gone "balls out" for a result - then select the next area to attack. But hindsight is 20-20 vision and now it will be sometime before any united approach is again considered I'm afraid.

In the short term, join one, any one, and get amongst it.

Chris.. I think you'll find that the MOM is not finished... only beginning... the problem lies within the Ministry for Transport.... it is a department that needs to be taken apart and rebuilt with a purpose... as it is now... you don't know who is going to be in charge from one year to the next.... and as a new person arrives their priorities change... it is a department that is very good at book passing... and as for giving clear guidelines to councils.... their having a laugh...... the Blind leading the blind and being paid very well for the privilege.....IMO.

Perhaps then the "Poachers" should band together in a MoM of our own and take the result to the DfT "Gamekeepers" as a fait accompli - no matter the current incumbant at the Dept.

We are one side of the fence so lets get it sorted this side - then lob it over to the opposition.
