Got to go to Girvan. Can travel up the motorway to just before Hamilton then turn off for Girvan from there. It's longer but seems more straight forward or I can come off the motorway just after Carlisle and head through Dumfries. The 2nd route is slightly shorter but what is the terrain like if I go that way? Does anybody know please?

I went to Ayr once in one of my stretched limos. I turned off just after Carlisle and went cross country. From what I remember the roads were fine and the countryside was great. Thinking about it, I believe that the route did actually go through Dumfries before the open countryside.

Toots stick to the main rout, if you come of at Carlisle you will have all the trucks to contend with heading to the ferry port at Stranraer

Toots come off at Carlisle and take the A75 to Dumfries, you actually bypass Dumfries nowadays, folllow the signs for the A76 (about 3 roundabouts) then stay on the A76 which takes you to Ayr and then Girvan. You have to go through a few small villages(Thornhill, Sanquhar, and a couple to others) but it is quite a bit shorter. The only bit you may come across ferry lorries is the bit between Carlisle and Dumfries - about 30 miles. (I live in Dumfrieshire).

Thanks skippy & latimer. I really do fancy the shorter route and if the wagons are only on a short part of it I quite fancy I'll do that. Is there somewhere nice to stop for a bite to eat going that route?

I am going via Newcastle. In fact I'm going via Thornton Cleveleys, Pontefract, Malton, Hartlepool, Bishop Auckland, Whickham, Beddlington and finally Ayr. You just don't want my smooth quiet vehicle to purr through Carlisle whilst your's screeches like a wailing banshee
