A Carlisle taxi driver who admitted speeding and had previous convictions for road rage and unlawful possession of a firearm has been stripped of his taxi licence.

Gary James Burgess, 36, yesterday begged the city council’s regulatory panel not to revoke his licence after he was caught speeding at 92mph on the M74.

Sobbing, he told councillors: “I’m due to get married in a month’s time.

“I’ve got debt up to here [pointing to his neck]. I can’t afford to lose my badge. It’s the only income I’ve got.

“I promise I won’t step out of line again.”

Mr Burgess, of Kestrel Hill, Gretna, said he had been “pressured” into speeding by a passenger who was desperate not to miss a flight. He explained: “I put my foot down. I know I shouldn’t have done.”

The panel heard that Mr Burgess, who drives for City Taxis, was granted a hackney-carriage licence in January.

Councillors had doubts then about his suitability but gave him the benefit of the doubt.

Since then there had been four complaints about his conduct, two for alleged road-rage incidents.

Mr Burgess denied wrongdoing and produced a passenger’s statement, which supported his version of events.

But licensing officer Barry Sharrock said: “Nobody is saying Mr Burgess was 100 per cent to blame [for the complaints] but four incidents in nine months shows he has a problem keeping his temper.”

Revoking Mr Burgess’s licence, councillor David Morton, the panel chairman, said: “The trust we placed in you appears to have been misplaced, even taking into account the explanations you have given.

“We have to protect the people hiring taxis. They have a right to expect they are being driven by someone responsible. The majority view of the panel is that you are not a responsible person.”

Mr Burgess can appeal to Carlisle magistrates.

The panel also suspended another driver for one month after he was convicted of theft.

Paul Corrie, 40, of Baird Road, Harraby, Carlisle, admitted making three calls to his wife on a mobile phone that a passenger had left in his taxi.

He said he had intended to return the phone but changed his mind and destroyed it after the owner and her father made abusive calls demanding it back.

He told the panel: “I deeply regret what I’ve done. It was a one off. I’ve learned from it. I guarantee it will never happen again.”

One of the alleged road rage incidents apparently led to a motorist following him a couple of miles and then giving him a piece of his mind......now to follow a person two miles and then to shout and bawl at him.....what does that tell you?

Tells me that the motorist was also allegedly commiting a road rage incident himself.

If I ask if the driver is appealing, you realise I mean in the Magistrates Court and not in any other way?

Garry two guns, as the wags on the ranks like to call him will be appealing I think.....but his chances at magistrates are negligable.

I would also point out, Carlisle CC also decided not to invoke section 52 at any point and he can drive pending appeal.

It sounds like you have a Nutter or two in Carlisle, Captain!!

Is it the Cumbrian fresh air that sends them that way, or does the Cumbrian air affect their 'Grey Matter'?#

I was referring more to the other 'Muppet' at the end if the article.

Found a mobile phone, made calls on it that would obviously be recorded for the owner to see or find out on the bill & then destroys the phone!!

What's his excuse, other than being a likeable character too?

Now the apparent story I heard today was that a punter got in his cab and said they didnt have any money.

The driver took the mobile phone.

The police went around his house and asked for the phone back.

The driver asked for the cab fare.

The police said it was a civil matter.

The driver smashed the phone on the floor and was arrested for criminal damage.

It's usually the case with people like that Cap. We've got one round here who's like that, he'll help the OAP's but his driving is shocking to say the least.
