Gary, you and I don't pay for the permit, our 'masters' are good enough to do that for us. They have not had to cough up for the Haymarket pass for about 3 years. If your professy of another 100 plates comes to fruision that will also dilute the work, will it not?

No, it will simply mean 100 double shifted taxis becoming single shifted, with the same guys doing the same job but driving their own vehicles.

So it is your belief that the 100 double shifted taxis will be replaced with 200 single shifted taxis and none of those drivers (that now own their own vehicles) will want to work longer hours, thus the trade will not be diluted

No, as a consequence of the unrealistic or realistic expectations of those working in the trade, the trade will evolve. Some will work more hours and some less, eventually it will work itself out.

I think it is unrealistic to expect drivers to pay ridiculous rentals or plate “values” to prop-up the illusion of owners, while operating in a depreciating market with diminishing returns.

However, I think it is realistic for drivers to have the choice to own or drive and to work their own hours.

If some owners can't exist by single shifting their vehicles, then perhaps they should be looking for another job.

We need higher standards and regulations but no restricted access to the to the tools of our trade.

The trade and the council's attitude to how it should operate, is an anachronism. You can manage change, or get swallowed up in the process.

Are you sure the trade will evolve? The drivers here are just working more and more for less and less, but, that could just be something that happens here



That will be sorted by supply and demand surely. When the uptake of rentals becomes less because people realise it ain't what it's cracked up to be then the rental prices will drop, won't they?

Well in a perfect world that would be nice but you have to remember that Best Practice don't like onerus conditions, regulations or standards. I also think that the 'tools of our trade' is the actual drivers licence but I could be wrong



Change takes time if it's rushed it could end up worse than the situation we have now. Things shouldn't be changed just because they are out dated there needs to be proper alternatives to be put in their place
