Taxi driver's fury over his unfair treatment A TAXI driver claims he lost his livelihood because the borough council’s licensing team did not treat him fairly. Marcus Colpus had worked as a hackney cab driver for three decades when he was accused of carrying more than the maximum five people on one journey on January 28 this year. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s licensing committee, which regulates hackney cabs, ruled in February this year that Mr Colpus could no longer work as a hackney cab driver in the borough, and he has been unemployed ever since. An appeal in the magistrates’ court in July failed and, with a young family to support, Mr Colpus and his girlfriend say the decision has ruined their lives. Mr Colpus, 54, said: “I know other taxi drivers who still have jobs but who, I believe, aren’t fit to be on the road. For instance, one taxi driver was caught with his tyres almost bald on three wheels which is very unsafe. Yet he wasn’t penalised at all because of a lack of evidence. “In my case, it was another driver’s word against mine, and I can’t even remember the night in question that clearly.” Mr Colpus, whose 19-year-old daughter Jolene was murdered in Basingstoke in 2006, claims other drivers have been treated far more leniently after breaching the rules. His girlfriend Kelly Walton, 33, said: “Marcus has been driving a taxi for 30 years and it’s all he’s ever known. We’ve been asking ourselves what he’s meant to do now. “With three young children between the ages of five and 10 to support, I am unable to work, and Marcus has found it impossible to find other employment.” Sophia Waite-King, communications officer for Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, said: “When making decisions, we apply a robust investigation procedure and then consider the evidence collated before determining what action is appropriate and proportionate. “I cannot comment on a specific case but we successfully defended our decision upon the appeal in the magistrates’ court.” |

Of course Toots, it may be because "bloodnock" is obviously a Goons fan - it's plain from his name. This may explain it for you... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSSGiA4f5cs |

Back to the story if this is just one drivers word against another then how can the council act our council are constantly stating that they cannot act if it is one drivers word against another that only complaints from the police or the public can be considered because of the implications |

But the banned driver has said he wasn't sure what happened or couldn't remember, whereas it appears the witness is/was sure. So it's not really one word against the other. |
