The mainstream press using the Worboys case to discredit black cabbies 27 October, 2010 09:14 (GMT +01:00) Editorial The horrible and disgusting acts perpetrated by a crazy lunatic, John Worboys, is damaging the image of black cabbies across London, unfairly. The black cabbies in London, who total approximately 28,000 decent men and women, provide an essential service to the capital, and the acts of Worboys, must not be allowed to damage the reputation of black cabbies in the capital. It seems the mainstream media will use the Worboys case to damage the image of black cabbies, and therefore the livelihoods of the families who depend on the work undetaken in black cabs. The failures of the Metropolitan Police has been overlooked, who did not properly investigate rape allegations from victims of Worboys, and allowed a dangerous criminal to wage a campaign of sexual violence inside a licensed black cab. Worboys should have been apprehended many years ago by the Met Police, but slipped through the net, with the Independent Police Complaints Commission ruling that the Met committed "serious mistakes". Without black cabbies we lose the face of London that represents the real side of London, men and women who have been born or raised in the greatest capital city, with a depth of knowledge of the streets of the capital that is second to none. The disputes that have been raging amongst various black cabbie organisations have allowed the issue of Worboys to go unanswered, without serious redress. Londoners and tourists who want to use black cabs must feel that it is the safest form of transport in London, hence the premium. The black cabbies must understand that the environment in London is fast moving and peoples views are volatile, Worboys may go down as one of the most prolific sexual predators in British criminal history, and for this reason alone, a campaign to rebuild confidence from black cabbies, is essential. The London Daily News has always been a supporter of black cabbies and this will be the case going forward, the acts of one lunatic must not be allowed to damage an entire community of law abiding people. Fleet street know no better all journalists are taught that the only way to sell newspapers is to sensationalise and destroy reputations the more viscious the attack the more likely the headlines will "grab the attention" of potential purchasers I think a campaign by black cabs to discourage people from buying newspapers which do attack their proffession would be in order |

Can I move an amendment, substitute "possibly" for "allegedly".
