Mayor of Elmbridge warns about taxi rank 7:00am Monday 8th November 2010 The mayor of Elmbridge has warned opportunist motorists against using a new taxi rank for free parking. Councillor Barry Cheyne was in Walton on Monday, November 1, to open the three space rank outside Pizza Express in New Zealand Avenue. He said: “It is very pleasing to see that at long last there is a taxi rank in Walton town close to the centre. It is many years since there was an official rank in the town and I know that the trade welcomes its return. “I do hope that the private motorist will respect the fact that it is a taxi rank and will not use it as a free parking space. The parking control wardens have assured me they will be most vigilant about ensuring that the rank will be kept clear for licensed cabs.” Elmbridge Council wants more taxi ranks in town centres and want to hear from residents for other suitable locations. Local taxi driver Terry Gregory said: “The new rank is in a good position for the taxi trade and our customers, especially for the night time.” For more information on taxis in the borough, visit elmbridge.gov.uk/taxis.
