Inquest hears man ‘of interest’ has been convicted of a similar offence 7:10am Saturday 13th November 2010 The prime suspect in the cold-blooded execution of a Bradford father-of-four nearly a decade ago, is serving a prison sentence for a similar shooting in New York, it has been revealed. Private hire driver Mohammed Basharat was shot twice in the head by a hooded gunman who burst into the minicab office where he worked. The killing happened the day after Mr Basharat was given a death threat after a road rage punch-up. A resumed inquest at Bradford yesterday was told that a man who had fled the UK shortly after the murder had subsequently been detained in Jamaica because he was wanted for a shooting in New York in 1993. Detective Inspector Nick Wallen told Coroner Roger Whittaker: “We have not got any direct evidence that links that man forensically to the shooting of Mohammed Basharat. “What we do know is that man fled the UK very shortly after this incident, and the shooting for which he was wanted in America bears a striking resemblance to the shooting that took place in Bradford.” Det Insp Wallen, of West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said the man had been convicted of the New York shooting and was a serving prisoner in the US. He added: “We have made attempts to speak to him in the US, but he has exercised his right not to speak to us.” He said the murder inquiry remained open and the man was a person of significant interest to police. Det Insp Wallen added: “We are satisfied that the man in the road rage incident and the man in prison in the US are one and the same.” The inquest heard that Mr Basharat, 33, of Leylands Lane, Heaton, was shot dead with a .38 calibre handgun in the offices of Little Horton Taxis, Park Lane, Little Horton, on October 20, 2001. Det Insp Wallen said that the previous day Mr Basharat was involved in a road-rage incident as he drove his taxi. He and the other driver, a Jamaican man, became involved in a heated argument and came to blows. Mr Basharat came out the better from the incident and the Jamaican, described as 5ft 6ins and of small build, abandoned his car and fled the scene, shouting: “You don’t know who you are dealing with. “I am going to kill you.” The next day Mr Basharat was at the private hire office when a similar man, dressed in dark clothing with his face covered and a hood pulled up, entered the premises. He was carrying a handgun and fired three shots at Mr Basharat, two of which hit him in the head. At the time of the murder detectives said they were examining possible links with Jamaican ‘Yardie’ gangsters. Mr Whittaker recorded a verdict of unlawful killing.
