CITY MPs welcome a House of Commons Inquiry into the licensing of taxis and private hire vehicles.

Local taxi operators and their representatives have in recent months made several complaints to the city’s MPs by about the loss of business resulting from cross-border activity by operators from neighbouring boroughs.

Iain Stewart MP and Mark Lancaster TD MP have thus welcomed this announcement that the matter will now be investigated by the Transport Select Committee in the Parliament.

MP for Milton Keynes South, and member of the Transport Select Committee, Iain Stewart said: “It is important to look carefully at this issue to ensure that there is a level-playing field for operators in Milton Keynes and that passenger safety comes first. I am looking forward to reviewing all the evidence and quizzing witnesses early in the New Year”

His Milton Keynes North counterpart, Mark Lancaster said: “After months of campaigning to address this complex issue I am pleased it is finally being scrutinised by the select committee. Though there are no simple solutions I look forward to their recommendations. I hope this will help us move towards the resolution of an issue that has warranted scores of complaints in Milton Keynes.”

The Committee is interested, in particular, in cross-border hire problems caused by private hire vehicles picking up passengers on a large scale outside of the area in which they are licensed.

Short written submissions should be sent no later than Monday 20 December 2010 to transev@parliament.uk.

If I remember rightly Mark Lancaster named here had tabled an early motion to try to stop pick ups out of area earlier this year. He withdrew his motion the night before the scheduled reading. I could not understand why at the time. Perhaps this is a done deal.

The time is now right to sort out this mess.

Let's hope that a fudge isn't the suggested solution, or a complete f*** up.

I'm rather hopeful, not sure why, but hopeful none the less. [-o<

One answer to the problem... is I am led to believe... that licensing officers across the country be given the authority to inspect all hackney and private hire vehicles where ever they are from.

Another answer is that... it is about time that councils are allowed to restrict the number of private hire... if that councils private hire fleet are concentrating on working in another area...

I think that is a positive move, but will it stop those with inferior standards/conditions taking work in areas where the standards/conditions are higher? :-k

From my own experience in the past... all it will do ... is give enforcement officers the power to play God.... and not have their own licensed drivers on their backs....

I am also led to believe... that there will be a strong suggestion... that the committee should look into councils... that set conditions for their own licensed drivers.... and then contract out their council work.... school contracts.. disabled contract... to firms from other areas because they're cheaper...... and then complain about cross border hiring

But only to inspect those vehicles if they are within the enforcement officer's own LA!!

I think you've been talking to that Y with a Brian.

But only if those vehicles are physically within the enforcement officer's own LA area!

Sefton and Liverpool officers are licensed to inspect each others vehicles... and at times work together in each other's areas... so what will be next?
