Letter in Dundee Telegraph

Taxi drivers ‘risking safety in the snow’

In 22 years of being a taxi driver these are the worst winter conditions I have ever experienced. If I was not struggling to pay bills, I would not have to put my safety at risk by working my taxi in the most appalling conditions.
No one should have to work in such dangerous conditions.

So come on Councillor Rod Wallace — what is it going to take before you start to address the legitimate concerns from the taxi trade about the over provision of taxis in Dundee?

Is someone going to have to get seriously hurt before you do something about it?

Earlier this year you said that as a matter of urgency a report should be done to find a resolution to the problem and that it should be put to the committee in September. Well this is now December and we are still waiting.

Councillor Rod Wallace you should consider your position as I think you have misled the taxi trade. — Taxi Driver.

He has a point, no driver should have to work in dangerous conditions just to meet the bills.

However there are 52 weeks a year.

That's a bit Snobbish, apart from you obviously how many taxi drivers are in a position to put extra money away for exceptional times in the current position that most taxi drivers are in, i for one have not been able to put extra money away for a rainy day or in most of the country's case wintry conditions

the first couple of lines sounded sincere up untill (so come on councilor rod wallace)the public are getting fed up of the same blatant whining and in the past week i have had customers (big tippers) saying they are glad the 20p rise is put on hold(gave me a 80p tip)hijacking any situation available will not work, the public tried phoning for taxis sun/mon but couldn,t get them because 90 per cent werent working, which then begs the question if 90 per cent can take the night off why cant the other 10 per cent?

Not snobbish, just a reality that every year we have sh** weather at some time.

I, like tone, I haven't been able to put anything aside to see me through times like this without working. So I have changed my hours as much as I can from back shift to day. The lack of cover Monday and Tuesday let me cover my Direct Debits, as October and November were hellish months for me. From today I hope I can try and put something away, depends on what the roads are like when I go out there. I might just relax for a day, and start refreshed again tomorrow, now that the bills are paid.

At a rough estimate I reckon this Sh*t weather has cost me £600 in lost runs due to School Closures, Airport Closures, Closed roads, Customers being turned away.

Its just unworkable...

Even as I type A guys just cancelled because the Trains have been stopped........Awwwwwwww fech it, time for a career change..

Just heard Alex Salmond trying to tell us that all the Schools should be open and the roads cleared...........aye its ok for that A Sole to say when he is Sitting pretty in the Scottish Parliament building or sitting at home with his huge salary to keep him warm...what a T*%$*r

The Problem is that what your paying the Bills with now was earned in the past....the Bills of the future will be harder to pay because of lack of income now.

The Tax Man will be Harder to appease this year as his Cut will have more than likely been based partly on the good year of post recession work and it'll need to be paid out of a tougher year of lower earnings and spiralling costs, money is going out at the same speed as its coming in or possibly going out faster than its coming in....this Next year is going to really hurt the unready and the unlucky.. :?

The letter writer should grow up.

What gives him the right to operate in a rigged market?

Why should the taxi trade alone operate with a restriction?

I'm sick fed up of stupid greedy taxi trade vested interests dumping on drivers and the public to satisfy their inability to compete.

Get real FFS.

Get out there and service the public. Compete. Stop sitting on ranks like the pathetic prostitutes you are waiting for work to come to you.

And realise now, restriction is about to end for all time.

get used to it.

You're dinosaurs. The market is opening up. And, unless you evolve to meet the new conditions, then like dinosaurs you're out of it.

BTW We're all in the same boat with the weather. I can't afford to be off, but I am because I know that I can't afford the taxi to be off the road because some clown ran into me.

That's just the way it is.
