Illegal pick up leads to driving ban for taxi driver

A private hire taxi driver who was spotted illegally picking up passengers has been ordered to pay nearly £1000 and banned from driving for six months.

Rashid Mustafa of Bradshaw Street, Nelson, Lancashire, was found guilty of illegally plying for hire and driving without insurance, during a hearing at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Wednesday December 1.

Private hire taxis are only insured if they have been booked through an operator and must not pick up customers who have hailed them down on the street.

Mustafa was fined £460 for picking up passengers illegally and received a six month driving ban for the driving without insurance offence. He was also ordered to pay £500 in costs plus a £15 victims of crime surcharge.

Manchester City Council officers caught the 41-year-old driver after witnessing him picking up passengers in the early hours of Sunday July 25, near the Printworks complex in Manchester City Centre.

Mustafa admitted at the scene that he understood the offence and later, during interview, agreed that he had picked up passengers illegally.

Councillor Nigel Murphy, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said:
"Manchester attracts thousands of revellers over the Christmas period and we will have officers out on the streets looking for taxi drivers who operate illegally.

"Drivers who pick up illegally put the public at risk as these journeys are uninsured. It is important the public only hail black cabs or pre-book a private hire taxi through an operator."
