Private hire drivers say they have been threatened for taking the long way round Private hire drivers are urging the Council to treat them and hackney carriage drivers equally in a row over bus lane cameras in Bradford city centre. New bus lane rules, banning private vehicles in Market Street and Bridge Street, along with Market Square in Shipley, have been introduced, with £30 fines for those who transgress. Hackney carriages are exempt but not private hire vehicles. Politicians, including Bradford East MP David Ward and Councillor Qasim Khan, are now lending their support to the private hire drivers. Mr Ward said yesterday: “This is extremely confusing for passengers – to them a taxi is a taxi and they feel entitled to the same service. “We are trying to encourage more people to come into the city centre, and this is not helping. “It is simply unfair to the private hire drivers that they should be treated in a disadvantaged way. It does not make sense. “The Liberal Democrat group on the Council has already discussed this and we want to review the whole of the policy.” Afsar Khan, manager of Tyersal Taxis, said they just wanted to be treated on an equal footing with hackney carriage drivers. He said: “If we pick a booking up from the Interchange and are heading towards Westgate, we have to follow the loop system all the way round. Passengers don’t understand why we seem to be going a long way round, especially if they have been drinking, and they can get quite nasty. “One driver had to take the £30 fine because he was threatened by a passenger with having his car smashed up if he didn’t drive directly in the bus lane. Private hire drivers are being put in a dangerous situation. “We are just asking for the rules to be changed so that private hire and hackney carriage drivers get equal treatment.” Councillor Qasim Khan (Lib Dem, Manningham) said his group would be seeking a Council motion next month, calling for private hire drivers to be given the same rights. Tyersal Taxis driver, Naeem Khan, 25, said: “It is hard enough to make a living these days. The Council should be making it easier for us, not harder.” Carol Stos, Bradford Council’s fleet and licensing manager, said: “Hackney carriage public hire vehicles and private hire vehicles are governed by separate legislation. “National legislation governs exemptions to the use of bus lanes and this legislation states that only vehicles available for public hire are allowed to use them, not private hire vehicles.” http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/ |

Exactly, a taxi is a taxi not a private hire. We know the public do not know the difference between private hire and hackney carriage taxis so why don't councillors spend some time educating them. Councillors should have knowledge of the trade before they make comments to the papers. If you want to be a taxi, get a hackney carriage licence, buy a 30k TX with metered fares regulated by your local authority. |
