Uninsured cabbie escapes driving ban

A SOUTH Tyneside taxi driver who ferried passengers while operating without insurance has been spared a driving ban.

William Gray, who has driven a Hackney Carriage in South Tyneside for 28 years, admitted he did not have insurance over the weekend of July 23 to 25 this year when he appeared before magistrates, but said it was simply an oversight.

The 65-year-old, of Hilltop Cottages, Nenthead, Alston, Cumbria, claimed it was down to his insurance policy running on a week-by-week basis and apologised for his error.

Angus Taylor, prosecuting on behalf of South Tyneside Council, said: "The defendant is a Hackney taxi driver registered with the council's licensing division.

"He admitted that he did not have any insurance between July 23 and 25, and admitted to carrying passengers in his taxi over that weekend.

"He said he thought he had renewed his policy, but had not.

Taylor, representing himself, said: "I've never been in any trouble with the law before.

"I understand what I did was a criminal offence, and I'm mortified."

Taylor was fined £125 for driving without insurance and ordered to pay court costs of £100. He was also given six points on his licence.

Excuse me but a week to week policy?? Something tells me he didn't have the money for a yearly policy.

Those things are run by a couple of firms, one in North Tyneside springs to mind........I dont know how or why they're acceptable.
