Taxi driver picked up illegal fares A TAXI driver escaped a driving ban despite illegally plying his trade and driving passengers around Bristol with invalid insurance. Abdul Salam, 36, of Ashman Close, Easton, was caught in a sting involving the city council's licensing department and Avon and Somerset police on May 15. Prosecuting at Bristol Magistrates' Court, Deirdre Simpson said on that night, two special constables approached Salam, who was parked in his blue Saab near the Marriott Hotel off Park Street, and asked him for a lift to the Novotel Hotel. During the journey they noticed he had not radioed the journey through to his taxi firm, AA Taxis. At the end of the journey they paid the fare and asked for a receipt. Shortly afterwards Salam was confronted by licensing officers. As a private hire driver, he was only licensed to pick up pre-booked fares and as he had not done so, his taxi insurance had become invalid. He denied he had done wrong, but when the licensing officers checked with the taxi office that he had not been booked, he admitted it. The case was proved in Salam's absence in November for offences of plying for fares without a valid license and driving without valid insurance. Representing himself at his sentencing hearing, Salam said he had taken the fare because he was scared not to, following a previous incident when his car was vandalised after he had refused to give two men a lift. He told the magistrates: "I understand, but I was scared, that's why I took them." Chairman of the bench, Jim Nye, said: "You must understand that plying for fares like that is against the law and much worse – you were driving them without insurance because your normal car insurance or your taxi car insurance does not cover you for picking up people willy nilly, as you see them. "You are not insured, the car is not insured – it's really bad." Salam was given six penalty points on his previously clean driving licence, fined £100 and ordered to pay the court costs of £412. |
