| Post subject: | Three arrested after attack on Derbyshire driver. |
Three arrested after taxi driver attacked for cash POLICE have arrested three people and are hunting for a fourth after a taxi driver was glassed during a failed bid to steal his money bag. A woman and two men were arrested after the victim was subjected to what officers said was a ‘vicious and unprovoked robbery’ at 4.20am yesterday near The Stanhope Arms in Ashby Road East, Bretby. PC Andy Kirkman, who is based at Swadlincote Police Station, said the driver was attacked after stopping in Burton to pick up three men and a woman who had asked to be taken to Swadlincote. The victim, whose details have not been revealed, appeared to have been hit on the head with a glass by one passenger during an unsuccessful attempt to grab his fare bag. The driver told detectives he had got out of his taxi and that the group had tried to steal it before running off. PC Kirkman said the driver suffered cuts to his face but the injuries were not lifethreatening. The cabbie was taken to Burton’s Queen’s Hospital for treatment and was later discharged. PC Kirkman said: “It was a vicious, unprovoked robbery. It was an unusual occurrence because we don’t get that many of these. But we are treating it very seriously.” The driver was due to give a statement to detectives, he explained. Police arrested an 18-year-old woman from Burton at the scene. They then arrested two men from Swadlincote, one aged 22 and the other 19, yesterday morning. PC Kirkman said the trio were due to be questioned by officers from CID at St Mary’s Wharf Police Station in Derby. None had been charged, he added. Officers were meanwhile hunting for a third man. Detective Sergeant Ian Louch appealed to anyone who saw or heard the incident to telephone Derbyshire Constabulary on 0345 123 3333 or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. The attack happened less than two months after a Swadlincote taxi driver was hospitalised after being punched by robbers who stole his takings and tried to hijack his cab. The 40-year-old cabbie, who was working for Alpha Cars in High Street, managed to lock himself in his vehicle and drive off when the three assailants tried to drag him out in Chestnut Avenue, Midway. The attackers stole a bag of food and used it to hit the driver around the head while throwing punches at his face, leaving him with cuts to one of his eyes. A 21-year-old man from the Woodville area was arrested the day after the attack on suspicion of robbery and assault. Two other men, both aged 22, were later arrested on suspicion of committing the same offence. |
