Taxi firms say Shropshire licence hikes are not fair Bosses of taxi firms in Shropshire today spoke of their fury at plans to put up licensing fees by up to 60 per cent next year which, they say, could lead to some firms quitting the business. The industry, along with businesses such as animal boarding kennels and sex shops, will face cost increases under proposals announced by Shropshire Council, which says its charges are currently well below those of neighbouring authorities. Fees are due to rise from next year with further increases also expected for the following three years. Steve Slater, part owner of Vincents Taxis in Shrewsbury, today claimed that the increases were unfair and could lead to some firms in the area quitting the industry. How can anyone here comment without knowing what the current fees are? For all we know they could be £50 for a plate and £60 for a badge.... |

Quote: What we are asking
The consultation runs from 20 August to 15 November. As part of the consultation five possible options have been suggested, Option one. Maintain the status quo - ie. There would remain a requirement for wheelchair accessible hackney carriages in the former Shrewsbury and Atcham area only. Option two. Require all newly registered hackney carriages to be wheelchair accessible. Option three. Require all hackney carriages to be wheelchair accessible from a set date. Option four. Shropshire Council could introduce differential licensing fees with reduced costs for wheelchair accessible hackney carriages. Option five. To remove entirely any requirement for hackney carriage taxis to be wheelchair accessible. |

Quote: Hundreds of private hire drivers in Telford are to be consulted by council bosses over proposed hikes in licence fees following a meeting last night.
After the meeting between Telford Private Hire Drivers Association and Telford & Wrekin Council, the council said all licensed drivers and operators in the borough would now get to have their say. The meeting was held after it was revealed the cost for renewing licences could rocket from £124 for a single operator licence to £365. The association said the rise could mean drivers would have to increase the minimum fare from £3 to £15 to make money. Controversy also surrounds a proposal to use part of the increase to pay for marshals to escort nightclub revellers to taxis. The council’s licensing committee proposed the increases, which could see a private hire driver’s licence for 12 months rise from £125 to £200 and the cost of a 12-month car licence jump from £134 to £225. But council bosses claim rate payers were subsidising the service at the moment to the tune of £40,000, which had to be addressed. Councillor Miles Hosken, cabinet member for community protection, said: “Telford & Wrekin Council has engaged in cordial and frank discussions with representatives of the taxi trade that have helped both parties to gain a better understanding of the situation. “We will collate the views that have come back from the trade as a result of yesterday’s pre-consultation talks and will copy these views to all the licensed drivers and operators in the borough to get their views.” Mohammed Zaman, chairman of the Telford Private Hire Drivers Association, said drivers would now consider their position. The reason I asked was because if it's down to costs of producing the licenses going up then by their own consideration when putting fares up most councils wouldn't get a rise

Then he needs to object, and send in some FoI requests over how the money is spent. |

I guess that would depend on what his base rent is and how many staff he has to pay for and how many drivers he has paying |
