Taxi driver fined for hit and run

A TAXI driver who admitted failing to stop and report an accident to police after smashing into a van while reversing onto a pavement revealed she was still working this week - driving children to school.

Elaine Hood, 38, of High Buckholmside, Galashiels, was spotted walking away from the crash outside the Fare Deal Taxis office in Paton Street, Galashiels, on the afternoon of August 20 - after stopping to admire the damage.

She was only caught after witnesses heard a loud bang and called police.

At the Justice of the Peace Court in Selkirk on Thursday, Procurator Fiscal Jennifer Linehan reported Hood had been made redundant following the smash.

But, representing herself in court, Hood revealed she was still working part time as a taxi driver on school contracts.

Justice of the Peace Michael Samphier find Hood a total of £240 and added six penalty points to her licence. Passing sentence, he said: "You are a professional driver, you were aware of your obligation to report an accident."
