Eastenders actor admits to £150,000 real-life crime on Celebrity Mastermind! Posted by Heatworld 07 January 2011 19:45 Eastenders actor Derek Martin, who plays black cab driver Charlie Slater appeared on Celebrity Mastermind last night, and admitted to stealing £10,000 worth of meat (worth roughly £150,000 in today’s shiny new money… ), despite standing trial and being found NOT guilty at the Old Bailey in the 1960’s! With a plotline not too far off that of an Eastenders special, the 77-year-old actor admitted to thieving a large amount of beef in 1961, at a time when he was working in the Smithfield meat market, long before he had ever taken up acting. Sat, fairly relaxed in the big black Mastermind chair, presenter John Humphries asked him. “Didn't you once convince a jury that you hadn't pinched some meat from Smithfield?” To which Derek Martin grinned, “Yes, a long time ago in 1960-odd, yeah.” To which John Humphries quickly followed up with, “Did you actually steal the meat?” “£10,000 pounds worth, yeah,” replied Derek Martin. “Oh, it wasn't just a chop?” “No, no, no, it wouldn't have been held at the Old Bailey if it was just a chop.” D’oh! Now, it could just be us, but isn’t the first rule of crime to never admit that you did it? Given that Derek Martin stood trial and was found not guilty there’s probably very little that PC Plod can do to bring him to justice now, 49-years on, but BBC viewers have been incensed. Many have complained to the BBC already about the glorification of his crimes etc etc… Does he feel guilty though? “No, I was just choked I never got the meat.” Oh. Really not doing yourself any favours by saying that, Derek. On a lighter note though, he did also admit that after the trial a member of the jury came up and congratulated him on his performance in the dock and told him that he ought to become an actor! What do you think heatworlders? Should Eastenders actor Derak Martin (aka Charlie Slater) be sent for trial again? Source; http://www.heatworld.com/Celeb-News/201 ... astermind/ |

Mmm..... I think glorification is a bit strong it was a bit of a joke and may be in bad taste but some people need to get a life imho |

It wouldn't be used for that level of crime. |

it was a £10K theft in 1960 worth £150K today he may confess after his public announcement, which would be enough Under the 2003 Act, retrials are now allowed if there is "new" and "compelling" evidence for certain serious crimes, including murder, manslaughter, kidnapping, rape, armed robbery, and serious drug crimes. All such retrials must be approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Court of Appeal must agree to quash the original acquittal. |
