| Post subject: | COUNCILLORS To Consider Dress Code For Taxi Drivers |
COUNCILLORS are to consider whether there should be a dress code for Inverclyde’s taxi drivers. At the moment there are no rules on what local taxi drivers should wear but other council areas have dress codes. In neighbouring Renfrewshire taxi drivers can’t wear trainers, baseball caps, tracksuits, denim and T-shirts. In Glasgow, shorts are also prohibited and their code also says drivers with moustaches and beards must keep them neatly trimmed. In Renfrewshire, male drivers must wear a plain shirt, plain tie, black dress shoes and navy blue or black trousers. Female drivers have to wear a plain blouse, navy blue or black skirt or trousers and black dress shoes. Inverclyde’s General Purposes Board will discuss whether there should be similar rules here at a meeting on Wednesday. Howard McNeilly, in a report to the board, states: “The adoption of a dress code would ensure that taxi drivers are smart and presentable in appearance and it is therefore recommended that the board considers adopting a dress code with which taxi drivers are obliged to comply.” http://www.inverclydenow.com/index.php/ ... xi-drivers |

It doesn't ensure anything other than they'll all be wearing similar clothes, but, there is no guarantee that they will look smart in said similar clothes. Are they obliged to comply with a dress code? Whilst I agree that some drivers are mighty scruffy and sometimes smelly can they legally enforce these changes? It could be argued that a 'fit and proper' person would be smart, washed and presentable when going to work |

I have no problem with dress codes, per se, but who enforces them? We have 3 companies in Falkirk who have a shirt and tie dress code. Drivers still refuse to wear them, even at the risk of being "put off the road" as far as radio work is concerned. They just go on the ranks. We have one enforcement officer to cover the LA. His ability to cover all of the district, given that there's at least 6 different distinct towns/areas where taxis ply their trade every day, would be nigh on impossible. Would the council employ more officers, would they hell. Doomed to failure if attempted here. |

Even in a saville row suit some people would still look a sack of [edited by admin], I dont think the council should dictate what you wear but definatly no shorts and vests. |
