Taxi driver is fined - COURT REPORT

A BRIDLINGTON taxi driver has been fined for using an unlicensed vehicle to transport young children.

Adrian Griffiths, of New Burlington Road, pleaded guilty to the charge at Bridlington Magistrates Court on Thursday, January 6.

Griffiths, an experienced taxi driver, used the unlicensed vehicle to transport two young children on at least one occasion.

He was prosecuted under Section 46 of the Local Government Provisions Act 1976 operating a vehicle within a controlled district without a valid licence in force.

Griffiths was fined £610 for the offence and was also ordered to pay £265 towards the council’s costs and £15 victim surcharge.

Paul Bellotti, head of housing and public protection, said: “This prosecution clearly shows the Licensing Authority’s commitment to stamp out illegal activity in the licensed taxi trade and protect the safety of the travelling public.

“We make the safeguarding of children a priority and the consequences of the use of an unlicensed vehicle could have been very serious as the action would invalidate any insurance in place and the vehicle would not have been tested to the council’s high standard of vehicle compliance.”

Anyone who suspects individuals of carrying out an illegal activity in relation to hackney carriage or private hire trade in the East Riding area can call the Licensing Team in confidence on 01482 396218 or email licensing@eastriding.gov.uk.
