DRESS Code Agreed For Taxi Drivers -- But No 'Fashion Police'

INVERCLYDE’S taxi drivers will be subject to a dress code, councillors agreed, but they stopped short of appointing any ‘fashion police.’

The idea of introducing rules on what cabbies can wear was raised with Inverclyde Council by Inverclyde Taxis.

The council’s General Purposes Board decided it was a good idea as taxi drivers were “ambassadors” for the area but conceded the code would have to be “self-regulated” by the taxi companies as the resources are not available to enforce it.

The code will be similar to other authorities and will include shirt, shoes and smart trousers for men and blouse, shoes, skirt or trousers for women.

Councillor Iain McKenzie said: “I am all for a code but don’t see how it can be policed. I look forward to the Tesco taxi rank being patrolled by the fashion police to make sure drivers’ shirts and ties match!”

Henry Glasgow of Inverclyde Taxis, which has its own dress code for drivers, said: “The idea is to lift the standard overall so we are not seeing trainers, tracksuit bottoms and football tops.”
