Lack of knowledge

Don't all the black cabs, licensed by Liverpool city council, have to do a knowledge test, similar to the one in London?

Last Thursday night, having just missed the bus, and being in somewhat of a hurry, I flagged down a black cab in Holt Road and asked the driver to take me to Edge Hill station in Tunnel Road, a straight run of about 800 yards or so.

Imagine my surprise when the driver admitted he didn’t know which way to go and that he had never heard of the place!

Now this chap was not young, nor was he foreign, and he spoke with a good Scouse accent.

We barely had time to swiftly go through two sets of traffic lights on green before he dropped me off at my destination a couple of minutes later where I joined a group of friends from an Art organisation called METAL who have been doing their very best during the last couple of years to keep this station in the public eye by holding various events there.

All I can say is, if one of our own, a black cab driver, no less, can’t find his way from Holt Road to Edge Hill railway station, the first purpose built passenger station in the world and still in use, less than half a mile from where he picked me up, on a straight road with no turnings, METAL’s task is going to be much harder than anyone imagined.

This a Genuine Gripe or a Plug for METAL....whoever the hell they are?

A touch of both, IMO. surely, if it's that significant a landmark, it would be in the knowledge test. Perhaps he is just trying to raise it's profile,so as it will need to be added. One for the liverpool drivers to comment on, methinks.

ON Wednesday January 19 my husband and I took my aunt to see Scouse Pacific at the Royal Court. The show was superb and so were all the cast.

My aunt is 77 years old and not too good on her feet. At the end of the show we walked around to the nearby hackney stand and as my husband was helping my aunt into the cab I went around to the driver and asked him if he could make sure that my aunt was safely in her house and that she would give him extra money to do so.

When we arrived home I rang my aunt to make sure she was home safe. She said that the cab driver had charged her £12.50 (which I think was extremely reasonable).

He had made sure that she was safely in the house and when she gave him double the fare, he said that it was too much and gave her £10 back.

We are so grateful for his wonderful gesture and we are quite sure that this is a much more accurate portrayal of Liverpool hackney drivers than the odd 'rip-off' case that we hear of.

Indeed; when I started reading this I was sure it was going to have a horrible ending. But it didn't.

Many a time I have had someone who I have never met say to me, make sure they get home safe drive, they are not ripped off, and I do make sure they get home.
