Man jailed for attacking taxi driver on Christmas Day Saturday, February 19, 2011, 09:30 A man was jailed for six years yesterday for attacking and robbing a taxi driver on Christmas Day. Jahmaine Davis got the driver in a headlock and demanded money while he was being driven through Beaumont Leys, Leicester. Prosecutor Mark Bishop told Leicester Crown Court that the victim, who drives for ABC Taxis, slammed on his brakes and the men got into a struggle. The driver managed to break free and got out of the car but Davis gave chase and attacked him, knocking him to the floor. Davis, who appeared to be high on drugs, rained punches on his victim as he sat on top of him. When the driver refused to hand over his cash Davis reached into his pockets and took £110 and a mobile phone. As the driver shouted to raise the alarm, Davis got into the Toyota Avensis taxi and drove off. The attack happened in the early hours of December 25 last year as Davis (31) was being driven from his home in Dominion Road, Glenfield, to Liquid Nightclub. Police were alerted by residents and Davis was arrested nearby in Beaumont Leys. Helen Johnson, representing Davis, said her client had suffered a terrible start in life after being born to a drug-taking prostitute. She said his natural parents rejected him and he had been adopted by a family. When he got into trouble with the police at the age of 12 his adoptive mother and father washed their hands of him. Miss Johnson said Davis had spent more time in care institutions and prisons than he had in the outside world. Miss Johnson said: "On Christmas Day he did not have anywhere particularly to be and was under the influence of some kind of drug." Davis pleaded guilty to robbery and to taking a taxi without permission. Judge Michael Pert QC told Davis, who had previous convictions, that he had the record of a violent thug. Judge Pert said: "If you appear before a court again you are in very real risk of being dealt with as a dangerous offender. The best break I can give you today is not to treat you as dangerous offender." The judge told Davis that if he was considered a dangerous offender then he could be given an indeterminate sentence, which would mean he would not be released until people considered him not a risk to the general public. John Chaplin, general manager of ABC taxis, said after the hearing: "I hope this sends out a strong message to everyone that taxi drivers are not fair game. If anyone attacks one of our drivers then we shall do what we can to prosecute them. "We hope sentences like this will deter offenders and protect our staff."
