Bromsgrove taxi driver jailed for 16 months for stealing from employer

10:02am Friday 18th February 2011

A Bromsgrove father-of-three who stole more than £14,000 from his employer with a series of forged cheques has been jailed for 16 months.

Ross Gethins worked in the office of BMC Taxis in Bromsgrove from 2006, and then as a driver, but he stole a cheque book and drew cash for himself.

His scam was revealed when HSBC bank queried a signature on a cheque and it turned out to be a forgery.

Gethins, 31, of All Saints Place, Bromsgrove, pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court to stealing £14,061 after issuing 56 forged cheques between March 2009 and April 2010.

Alex Warren, prosecuting, said Gethins was trusted with the keys to the office and he wrote out cheques in favour of himself. He claimed he had been working unpaid for extra hours and the money was compensation. He had a history of petty offences for dishonesty.

Charles Hamer, defending, said Gethins had been taken on by another taxi firm despite disclosing the imminent court appearance. He had started using heroin when he was young and this had resulted in him getting into trouble He had split from his partner but still helped to care for two of the older children.

Recorder Nicholas Syfret QC said Gethins had been a trusted employee and had been given a chance despite his criminal past. Many decent people on low incomes did not resort to theft as Gethins had done during his criminal past.
