'999 taxi trip' to doctor

22/02/2011

A hospital sent a woman with an open stomach wound in a taxi to a specialist 93 miles away to save £500 on an ambulance, it was claimed yesterday.

Bowel surgery patient Wendy Weeding, 47, had bile seeping on to her gown for the three hour and 20 minute trip from Ipswich to St Mark's Hospital in Harrow, North West London, her husband Andrew said.

Mr Weeding, 55, of Hintlesham near Ipswich, said: "She is seriously ill and in constant pain. I am furious."

Ipswich Hospital has ordered an urgent investigation. Chief executive Andrew Reed has apologised for the apparent "appalling lapse of standards".

I don't think it's jus the hospital at fault here, why on earth would a driver or a taxi company consider this acceptable :?
