| Post subject: | Taxi drivers organise a collection for robbed OAP |
Feb 25 2011 by Gavin McInally, Paisley Daily Express CARING cabbies have gone that extra mile to support an elderly woman who was robbed by a callous crook. Drivers and staff at Renfrewshire Cab Company were shocked when the Paisley Daily Express told how a frail OAP had £250 stolen from her handbag. The 68-year-old victim, who lives in the South End of Paisley, had her money taken after a cabbie picked her up before insisting on loading her bags into the boot of his car. She only found out she had been robbed after she got home and, since then, has been too frightened to leave her house. Now kind-hearted staff at Renfrewshire Cab Company have started a collection for the pensioner – who has been a regular customer with the Paisley firm for more than 20 years – to ease her money worries. Peter Kelso, Renfrewshire Cab Company office manager, said: “The drivers were disgusted when they heard about this incident. We all were. “I’ve known the woman in question since I was a boy and it’s shocking to think that anyone could have stolen money from her. “When I first read the story in the Express, I saw that she mentioned taking sweets down for the drivers and that’s true. She’s that kind of person and, as well as being a regular customer for a long, long time, she is also well liked by the drivers. “It’s only right that we start a collection for her and hopefully, by the time it ends, we will be able to give her the £250 she lost.” Any extra money raised from the collection will be donated to ACCORD Hospice, in Paisley. Mr Kelso added: “Being a Paisley company, we are keen to do what we can for the town and we’ve had fundraisers for the likes of ACCORD before and arranged transport for children. “It’s obviously difficult to predict how well any collection will go but we’re hoping to raise around £500, which would mean we could also donate £250 to ACCORD.” The Paisley pensioner, who has asked not to be identified, is full of praise for the cabbies who have organised the collection on her behalf. She told the Express: “It’s such a lovely thing for them to do and it means the world to me. I want to say a big thanks to the company for organising the collection.” As previously reported by the Express, the cabbie who was accused of stealing the OAP’s money has since quit his job. It is understood the police were also asked to investigate the incident but didn’t have enough evidence to proceed |
