Taxi driver stopped for using phone

9:04am Saturday 26th February 2011

A taxi driver has been fined after admitting three motoring offences.

A police officer spotted Siddik Umerji, aged 35, driving while on a mobile phone at 10.35am on October 4 in Slater Street, Bolton.

Bolton Magistrates Court heard yesterday that when Umerji was stopped, he was also found not to be wearing a seatbelt and had no insurance.

Richard Stone, prosecuting, said a friend of Umerji’s had hired the car and he had paid him £300 to use it.

Umerji, of Saltwood Grove, Bolton, said: “I am a taxi driver, I have three children, I have to take them to school every day and I have to pay bills and a mortgage.”

Magistrate Gillian Knowles ordered the Umerji to pay a total of £630 in fines and court costs. His driving licence was also endorsed

Is this newsworthy in Bolton then? Must be a lot going on up there.

I could stand at the end of my road and see a few dozen people doing the same within an hour.

It sounds like loads in London on every street corner according to one Green Badged Cabbie.

I'm sure that's not true though.

well, as he got nicked for it we can assume he was private hire?

if had worn his belt and gone handsfree he would still be driving around uninsured...................

I'd like to think people I know are respectable professional Taxi drivers.

But the other side in London?

God only knows. If half of them were licensed it would be a start!
