A taxi company claims it is the first black cab firm in Scotland to go "carbon neutral" after unveiling its latest vehicle.

Central Taxis in Edinburgh has started the initiative which will see it go carbon neutral for all booked journeys at no extra cost or surcharge to the customer.

To be certified as carbon neutral, Central Taxis is working with CarbonNeutral Company, a world-leading provider of carbon reduction solutions, to reduce its CO2 emissions for booked journeys to net zero.

This will be done through the Tieling Coal Mine Capture Project, a verified carbon offset project located across six coalmines in the north-eastern province of Liaoning in China. It captures coalmine methane (CMM) and uses it as an energy source to supply gas to homes and local industry.

Central Taxis chairman Bill Purnell was joined by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill, who is a long-term supporter of the black taxi trade, at Festival Square in Edinburgh on Monday to unveil a new green taxi.

Mr Purnell said: "By investing in becoming carbon neutral, Central Taxis is leading the way in taking responsibility for the unavoidable emissions associated with car travel, and helping to cut Scotland's carbon footprint.

"As a co-operative company, all of our drivers are behind this move and we are excited about the opportunity this offers our customers to engage in carbon neutral travel.

"We have always put innovation at the forefront of our customer service strategy and the decision to go carbon neutral for booked journeys is a major milestone for us."

What a load of Tosh!!! China is about as big a producer of CO2 as you can get and off setting your own over-polution against that of someone elses under-polution is not exactly Zero Polution, its simply leaves things as they were anyway....

How gullible are government ministers that they see daft gibberish like this as helping to cut emissions when all it is really doing making no differance at all....

I think I'll go ZERO emissions as well by decidng not to burn that old shed at the bottom of garden after all and leave the CO2 emissions from its Cancelled flaming demise stored in the rotten wood of the shed itself...Clever huh!

Ooops...I forgot though, that as the shed rots away it will produce methane gas which is an even bigger cause of global warming than CO2 is.....Maybe I should phone a bloke in china and agree with him not to burn his old rickshaw and offset my carbon emissions against his so then I can burn my shed with a clear conscience.

That in turn will make me and my fleet really green and I can advertise as being one of Scotlands leaders in green technology..and all thanks to my old Shed!!

The taxi still runs on diesel. The fumes are still polluting Edinburgh's atmosphere.

BTW MacAskill would be a lair to claim long term support for the taxi trade. He supports only one part of the taxi trade. The vested interests.

If he supported the whole trade, including the workers, he would not be defending restriction.

Get used to the fact that the ills of our trade are due to restriction. That's where justice fails, and what gives the council the power to treat us like 2nd class citizens.

Carbon nreutrality is achieved by polluting here and paying someone else who can reduce their carbon output for carbon credits, thereby achieving neutrality. A balance between the two is struck.

Fine, except we pollute here and China gets lower pollution and presumably cash in the bank.

So, what's the point here? Of what benefit is this to our environment?

And how much does this cost? Do drivers really want to pay more when the inevitable hike in radio dues comes?

It may be Purnell getting the plaudits, and it may be MacAskill basking in the glory and political photo opportunity, but where's the benefit for the rest of the public?

We pollute and pay more for taxi fares as a special privilege.

Tell me where I've got this wrong.

Who audits that there's no double selling of the carbon credits?

What's to stop the Chinese selling the same credits over and over, a nice earner that does nothing for the planet?

Seems little more than another political illusion in an attempt to convince that its worthwhile having politicians.
