Heard a rumour that PHC radio fees in edinburgh are approx £30 per week more than the black cab radio fees

Why would anyone pay more in radio fees to receive less work and at a discounted rate?

No brief, no purpose built cab & no choice but to work a radio system.
Captive market, so to speak.

Maybe because they haven't got £50,000 going spare. :?

Is their radio fees, not an indication of how much work the taxi “trade” has lost over the last few years?

Think of it as a test, if they are daft enough to pay it, it's no more than they deserve. :)

You are right there. If the fees go up and a few drivers leave, there will be a bit more work for the rest so they will thing that they are getting a better deal.

Exactly.

I would be more than happy to pay 50% more office dues if 50% of the exiting fleet left. :D

Fees for private hire on the circuit here is greater than that of the hackney working the same system and the fees are not a reflection of how much a private hire driver can earn so it isn't a reflection of how much work the hackney trade has lost. People prefer to phone for a taxi/ph here rather than go outside and see if they can flag one down. Its that simple. If you want more work you need to do phone work as well

In 2000, there were approximately 300 ph working in Edinburgh. It's more than three times that at the present moment. They've come a very long way in a relatively short space in time. From old Ford Sierras to top of the range executive class vehicles with driver who are suited and booted to do the job. Gone are the days of the Micky Mouse Ph companies all competing against one another while sea gulling work of the hacks. If the last10 years, is anything to go by the Ph will probably overtake the taxi fleet in numbers. The difference between the two in will be insignificant to the public, mobile technologies will see to that. In the coming years there might not be any need for companies acting as middle men to answer phones and dispatch work. A simple app on your phone will hook you up directly with your nearest available taxi, job done. The need for expensive radio dues and committeemen filling their pockets will be gone.

Well that will be a pleasant change although currently there is nothing to prevent ph going it alone and getting their own work

A cracker last week.

Cabbie from Skippy land fuelling up. Wearing trainers and three quarter length troosers.

He saw my quizical look and ventured that he had a wait and return fare from Gala to the casino. Seems the passenger was denied entry because of dress code. Cabbie then swaps his trousers and shoes so fare can get in.

Now that's real service.
