Cigarette cost cabbie £231

A taxi driver who was caught having a cigarette in his cab has been convicted of an offence of smoking in a smoke-free place.

Lorne Scott Stevens, 33, was seen smoking inside his hackney carriage in Chesterfield town centre. North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates’ Court heard it is an offence for a person to smoke in a vehicle used by the public.

Chesterfield Council offered Stevens, of St John’s Road, Newbold, a £50 fixed fine as an alternative to prosecution but he did not pay.

He later pleaded guilty, was fined £116, and ordered to pay £100 costs plus a £15 surcharge.

We get loads round this way who still smoke whilst still inside their cab. There are only one or two who actually get out of their cabs to have a smoke.
