Taxi driver questioned by police over Bootle lead theft

A TAXI driver was questioned after lead was stripped from the roof of an engineering firm. The 33-year-old cabbie, from Runcorn, was arrested on suspicion of theft after two other men were seen loading lead into a private hire taxi in Well Lane, Bootle.

Staff at a nearby business noted down the registration number after witnessing the June 14 theft. Two police community support officers spotted the taxi outside a scrapyard in Well Lane.

The taxi drove off from officers but was later traced to the firm’s office and the driver was arrested on suspicion of theft and handling stolen goods. His taxi was also seized for forensic examination.

He has since been bailed pending further inquiries. Police are still investigating who the other men were. The price of lead and copper has soared and it is being stolen to sell on as scrap.
