Skye company loses out after 20 years – then rival reveals wish to subcontract work locally A Skye taxi boss has spoken out after his firm was overlooked for a Highland Council contract and then asked by the successful company if it would be a willing subcontractor. Angus Macfarlane, of Portree-based Gus’s Taxis, said he was shocked when rival English company Sheridan Myers Management Services LLP was awarded a contract he had held for almost 20 years – and then he was phoned by the firm to be asked if he would do the job for a lesser price. It is understood the Walsall-based company has tendered for the majority of Highland Council’s conveyance of school meals contracts and, according to Macfarlane, has won around 75% of them, to the detriment of local firms, some of whom have held the contracts for more than 30 years. |

I concur with those sentiments, but you have got to give it to them cos I doubt even I would have the balls to make that phone call. |

We where informed by our council that under the new procurement rules, that once a contract was won by a company only they could under take it and it could not be subcontracted out and it must be the same driver or a nominated one from the same company So have our council got it right??? |

and it must be the same driver or a nominated one from the same company So have our council got it right??? That may be the rules for pupil contracts where the vehicle must be plated and the driver badged etc. This contract was for school meals and is therfore probably not covered by the same terms and conditions. Under eu rules anyone within the eu can tender for any government contracts. |

Surely if all the taxi owners/drivers from Skye boycot this firm from Walsall they will not be able to honour their contract and will eventually lose it. At that point the Skye boys can then move in for it. In an ideal world this would be the answer but l realise its taxis we are talking about here. |
