Another council tries again!! Bid to make all Welwyn Hatfield taxis silver back on agenda Wednesday, July 6, 2011 Plans to make all taxis in Welwyn Hatfield silver coloured are back on the table. Welwyn Hatfield Council officers tried to introduce the new conditions for taxi drivers two years ago, but were taken to court by the trade. They were rapped over the knuckles for not consulting the public, and have now hired independent consultants at a cost of £5,000 to conduct a survey. Changes being sought include: all taxis to display council-issued signs, Hackney Carriage vehicles to carry roof top lights and insurance documents to be carried at all times. A council spokeswoman said: “As part of this process, the council is consulting taxi users, the trade and the general public on what matters to them and what their experiences have been when using local taxi services.” Cllr Bernard Sarson added: “It is important we hear from both the public as well as the taxi trade so any proposed changes take account of both views; though ultimately, the review is to improve the taxi service for the public. “It is vital that they feel safe and confident using taxis and that drivers maintain high standards.” The consultation closes on July 29.
