Derby taxis stopped over safety issues
9 July 2011
Police and city council licensing officers have been stopping taxis in Derby to check for defects as part of a safety operation.
Officers said 29 Hackney and private hire taxis were stopped last week and four drivers were given prohibition notices for the condition of the taxis.
One had such serious tyre defects, it had to be towed away while the other three were driven off for repair.
Similar operations are planned for the future, a police spokesperson said.
In June, 17 vehicles were taken off the road due to safety concerns.
Pc Lee Simpson, roads policing officer from Derbyshire Police, said: "It's encouraging that fewer vehicles have been found to be defective when compared to our checks earlier this year, but it shows that there are still drivers out there who are prepared to use unsafe taxis."
"Drivers need to be aware that we take vehicle defects very seriously and their livelihoods may suffer if a prohibition notice prevents them from driving."
