A procession of taxis brought children with learning difficulties from London to enjoy a day at the seaside on Wednesday, for the 20th year running.

The taxi run organised by the Albany Taxi Charity Fund in conjunction with the Hastings LVA, saw 90 black cabs and around 300 children and their carers travel down in convoy from Blackheath in south London.

Once in Hastings, the cabs travelled in style with a police escort to the sea front, where the children enjoyed refreshments, the funfair, and other amusements free of charge.

Former chairman of Hastings LVA Joe O’Riordan, who organised the first taxi run to Hastings 20 years ago, said: “It was a wonderful sight, all the cabs coming down the road with their police escort, and everyone involved really enjoyed themselves.”

At 4.30pm the group returned to the cabs and moved on to Azur for a late lunch, before making the journey back to London at about 6.30pm.

All the London cab drivers were volunteers who had given up a day’s work to take part in the event.

Mr O’Riordan said: “This is something that Hastings can be very proud of. We have never missed a year so far, and we look forward to the next 20 years."

“Special thanks goes to the Ashburnham Arms, and in particular the ladies’ darts team for their fund-raising efforts.”
