‘Speeding taxis need tracking’

AN idea to track all taxis in the Vale to make sure they are not speeding was put forward by a district councillor on Monday.

David Vick said trackers would catch the ‘minority’ of cabbies who speed or ply for trade in the wrong area and also private hire drivers who illegally pick customers up off the street. He said they would give ‘protection’ to the majority of reputable drivers.

The council’s licensing committee agreed to look into the idea, although Councillor Janet Blake said she thought trackers would be a ‘waste of time’.

The committee also agreed to continue the current limit of 50 for the number of hackney carriages allowed in Aylesbury. It also agreed to delay the implementation of new vehicle age limits. At the moment no car can be more than 10 years old. This was due to be reduced to eight years next year but has been delayed due to the credit crunch.

This is an invasion of civil liberties again what gives the council a right to spy on cabbies and PH to this extent. There are many overly severe speed limits in some areas and I'm sure most people on here would admit to going over a little when you are on your way to a job and late because of the traffic or buses blocking the road instead of using bus stop laybys lost foreign lorry drivers tourists sightseeing by driving round at 10mph etc etc.

Draconian measures like this only serve to make the service provided worse the most important thing to most customers is that their taxis pick them up on time not the peace of mind knowing that it has stuck rigidly to the speed limit !

"also private hire drivers who illegally pick customers up off the street"

How does a tracker detect this then ? Another councillor spouting about a subject they know nothing about.

In my most humble opinion....
a firing squad would suit most councillors.

Derby City Council's latest initiative is to make all cabs display a sticker asking customers to report the driver should he use either (hands free) mobile or sat nav whilst having a customer on board.
We already have a large complaints sticker displayed!
