Cameras fitted in Bolton taxis to prevent crime

CCTV cameras have been fitted in taxis in Bolton, Greater Manchester, to try to prevent drivers being the victims of crime. Two hackney cabs and four private hire vehicles have been fitted with two cameras and a microphone in a pilot.

If a driver in one of the vehicles is in an incident they can report it to Bolton Council or the police, when the images will be downloaded. Stickers will be displayed in taxis to tell people they are being recorded.

Councillor Ismail Ibrahim, of Bolton Council, said: "Taxi drivers are often subject to abuse and the cameras should act as a deterrent and help identify perpetrators. "We will be monitoring and evaluating the pilot to see what effect it's had on the number of attacks on taxi drivers."

Ch Insp Shane O'Neill, of Greater Manchester Police, said CCTV was "an invaluable tool" for officers. "The CCTV positioned in taxis across the borough will not only provide vital reassurance to drivers but also enable officers to thoroughly investigate reported crimes," he said.

"I want to reassure all taxi drivers that we take any report from them seriously and will robustly investigate any offence to trace and arrest the offenders."
