City taxi driver drove Carlisle man who couldn't pay to police station A Carlisle man who couldn’t get a loan from his girlfriend’s parents to pay his taxi fare has ended up in court. James Weaver, 31, of Balmoral Court, Etterby, appeared before Carlisle Magistrates’ Court. Prosecutor Adrianne Harris said he had run out of money while his girlfriend was away so called a taxi to take him to her parents’ house to ask them for some cash. They refused and when the taxi driver realised he wasn’t going to be paid, he drove Weaver straight to the police station. Defence solicitor Geoff Lockerbie said his client had been sure he would be able to borrow the money and that the incident was a “one-off”. Weaver was given a 12-month conditional discharge. I had a similar situation some weeks ago whereby I drove a woman to the police station, it was then indicated by a chappie on the desk (not a police officer) that there are some police officers who would regard my actions as "Abduction" and that it would be wise to be careful. It was not a veiled threat by him, I just think that he was trying to be helpful. Having said that I do not think that "Abduction" would stand up as a charge in its full meaning. Abduction in its criminal meaning would be just that i.e for criminal purposes. Mine is to apprehend someone committing a criminal act, therefore I believe that it is perfectly legal. No doubt someone in our P.C society will put it to the test one day, but it does need clarifying. |

If that holds true then every body that the police arrest could holler Abduction as well..........and that dont happen. |

I think that they have the ACTUAL power to do just that, we do not apart from a citizens arrest (and that is fraught with danger) have the same power/rights. |
