Accrington taxi driver fined over badge

TAXI licensing checks have seen a Hyndburn driver ordered to pay £165 by magistrates.

Driver Azher Khan, of Richmond Hill Street, Accrington, was fined for driving while not wearing his driver’s ID badge.

Hyndburn Council’s licensing enforcement officer Alan Goulden discovered the breach as Khan was transporting children to Broadfield Special School in Fielding Lane, Oswaldtwistle.

Khan pleaded guilty to the offence before Hyndburn magistrates and was fined him £100, plus £15 victim surcharge and ordered to pay £50 prosecution costs.

You should know by now that the £15 victim surcharge is a charge made on all those convicted and it goes into a cental pot to be dished out to victims of crime who can't get compensation for crimes committed against them. Some of this may find it's way to the shop owners, and others, who lost everything in the recent riots and can't get anything from their insurance.

So how has a Taxi driver, forgetful to wear his badge added in any shape or form to the riots? Perhaps he should have head butted the HCO and only gotten community service.

Usual council [edited by admin] then.A real crime that!!!Especially if he is a regular driver for the kids.I've had my school run 15yrs,I reckon the kids and parents know who I am by now so do I wear me badge every day???
I always do at other times btw

As for the £15 victim surcharge....it's a tax, nothing else.Next time some scumbag does something to you or your vehicle and you are awarded compo, and said scumbag doesn't pay his fine.....do let me know if you get anything from this fund....I wouldn't hold me breath though!

No, not "usual council [edited by admin] then" It's the law. Flout the law, pay the penalty.

Now I'm sure all of us on here are good little boys and girls and always wear our badges but can anyone truly say they have never forgotten to pick it up in the morning or couldn't remember where they put it down when they took it off nobody is perfect it is easily done and if this is a first offence the punishment is more than a little harsh

Since my Badge was ripped off and stolen, when some oiks attacked me, I no longer wear it, but as it was found a couple of hundred yards down the road and returned to me, I did not have to pay the Council's extortionate Replacement Fee.

However, I do display it prominently in the Cab, so that it is easily visible to all and sundry.
