Taxi driver in court over Milford Haven carnival incident4:18pm Friday 31st August 2012A Milford Haven taxi driver was bound over by magistrates following an incident at the town's carnival celebrations.
Paul Medlicott of Haven Drive, Hakin, had previously pleaded not guilty to using threatening words or behaviour but changed his plea to guilty yesterday (Wednesday, August 29) because he said, he had been refused legal aid.
Medlicott, 48, said he would plead guilty so "I can go home".
Prosecutor Lesley Harbon said that at around 5.30pm on July 7 at Marble Hall football ground police were directed to where "something was about to kick off".
Medlicott was seen arguing with another man and when officers approached he appeared to be intoxicated and swore at them, Mrs Harbon said.
When he was warned he repeatedly swore at officers and they believed he was "spoiling for a fight".
As he resisted arrest he fell on two small children, the court heard.
Medlicott said he had only had four pints, was not drunk and was not spoiling for a fight. The other man involved was his brother-in-law he told the court, and they were very good friends.
"I did not fall on two children, they put me down on two children," said Medlicott.
He said police did not see the initial argument and repeatedly stated that their version of events was not correct.
The court was not willing to accept Medlicott's guilty plea because he did not believe he was actually guilty.
The bench said that if he accepted swearing that could have caused a breach of the peace the case could be dealt with as a civil matter and he could be bound over. Presiding magistrate Angela Smith "strongly advised" that he did so.
Medlicott was bound over for 12 months, accepting his behaviour had caused a breach of the peace.
