New taxi partnership aims to improve council links

A TAXI partnership has been set up in Derby to improve the relationship between Derby City Council and cab drivers.

It comes on the heels of the reformation of the city's bus partnership.

Drivers of Hackney cabs in Derby will attend the first taxi partnership meeting on Tuesday, September 11.

The partnership has been established by councillors Ranjit Banwait and Asaf Afzal to discuss a variety of issues covering areas such as taxi licensing, traffic and parking.

They said the meeting would look at how both the council and drivers could work towards a stronger relationship and understanding between each other. Council officers will also attend the meeting to answer questions.

Mr Banwait, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "We are committed to ensuring that the transport needs of the people of Derby are well served.

"Licensed Hackney carriages provide a valuable service to the public and I want to make sure that the council recognises this and works with taxi drivers to ensure that their needs are understood and concerns are addressed."

He said the new taxi partnership was part of the council's strategy to provide a more co-ordinated approach towards transport providers in the city, including bus and train operators.

There are currently around 414 drivers licensed to drive Hackney carriages in the city and around 944 private hire taxi drivers.

Hackney cabs are those which can be flagged down in the street, while private hire vehicles must be booked in advance.
