Discrimination warning for taxis

Taxi drivers are being warned not to discriminate against passengers, after a driver was fined £150 for refusing to carry a blind woman with her guide dog.

Sheffield City Council said it would actively pursue any drivers who treated people with disabilities differently.

Liaqat Khan, from Sheffield, was also ordered to pay £575 costs by Sheffield magistrates on Thursday, after he admitted refusing to collect the woman.

She complained to the council who then traced Mr Khan and took him to court.

Stephen Robertson, from the council's licensing department, said they took any complaints of discrimination very seriously.

"We will not tolerate drivers treating passengers differently for any reason and I'm asking anyone who receives a less favourable service on any grounds to get in touch with us," he said.

The council advised passengers who want to make a complaint to note the license number of the vehicle and the name of the taxi firm.
