Cabbies dropping drunken passengers off at Manchester Airport told to report them to police

The initiative is part of a crack-down on anti-social behaviour following a recent spate of drunken stunts, which included a man stripping off on the runway and two women getting topless at check-in

Airport police have a new tactic to tackle drunken passengers – getting cabbies to dob them in before they arrive at the terminal.

The initiative is part of a crack-down on anti-social behaviour following a recent spate of drunken stunts, which included a man stripping off on the runway and two women getting topless at check-in.

Officers say they have spotted a trend for holidaymakers getting drunk before hailing a taxi to the airport.

Fiona Jay, community beat officer at the airport, said: “It is rare but we have even had passengers arriving with crates of beer. It’s about educating taxi drivers to let us know about people if they seem to be drunk and then we know they are coming and can even meet them when they arrive in extreme cases.”

It’s hoped the move will take some pressure off handling agents at check-in who currently bear the brunt of the few troublemakers.

Pc Jay added: “It’s only one in 10,000 passengers who causes trouble but it means we can check they are okay for departure and possibly hold them back for a few hours if needed.

“We are reasonable with passengers – they can enjoy a few drinks but if they are being obnoxious, abusive and are not fit to fly they will not get on the flight.”

Gary Bregan, general manager at Wythenshawe’s Club Cars, said: “We don’t get too many drunk passenger but it’s a good idea. If we ever have problems with passengers we can also take them straight to the airport police station.”

It’s hoped the new tactic will be in full force before Easter.

Good idea matey, take them to the police station. Where you may be arrested on a charge of false imprisonment or kidnap.

Is the same request going out to bus and train drivers?

Are there not enough CCTVs in airports?

Strange how the police don't want them dropped off at the airport but are quite happy to put them into a cab

Don't airports have to pay for their dedicated cops? :-k

They seem to spend a lot of police budget on anti-terrorism measures, which (fortunately) only gets used once in a blue moon, but an everyday occurrence like drunken passengers, there's no budget for that and shifts responsibility to the likes of US! Once word gets round that XYZ Taxis dobs drunks in, where do you think their business will go?
