300 taxis take part in protest about illegal faresMORE than 300 taxis staged a protest in West Bridgford yesterday after drivers claimed Nottingham City Council were not doing enough to prevent private hire drivers picking up passengers illegally.
The cabs drove to County Hall, West Bridgford, to lobby the Police and Crime Panel meeting.
Jamil Ahmed, chairman of the Hackney Taxi Association in Notts, said: “It was absolutely superb, it was very well organised, it went very well. We had 80 per cent of the taxis turn up and Paddy Tipping at around quarter to two.
“The comments he made were very positive.
“I think there’s a chance of another protest later in the year. It’s just a matter of time because the situation in the city at the moment is people’s lives are being put at risk.”
Jane Urquhart, portfolio holder for planning and transport, previously told the Post: “We don’t believe there is a problem of illegal plying for hire by private hire cars in Nottingham on the scale suggested by the local Taxi Federation.
“However, we do carry out regular enforcement to clamp down on this, often resulting in prosecution, and we were encouraged during the latest operation by 96 per cent compliance.”
